An experiment with a spool

Hello, everyone.

As most people who sew know, thread spools get emptied. I just can't bear to toss them without trying to find a use for the cylinder shaped cores.

Beginning the weave. You can see that the pattern was for
odd count flat peyote. 1 row less would have been a better idea.
Below, a picture of the weaving on the spool:

Progress to date.
The spool is in need of a top cover and hanger, and dangle or fringe for the bottom.

Last year when I tried this, it was a smaller spool. For the end covers, I glued on a piece of card stock the right size before adding more things to it.

Two drop peyote spiral

The measuring done before drawing the design this year was done from the wrong end points. The design would work better with 26 rows instead of 27, and it would have been easier to weave as well. (The odd count turns get involved at one end of the beadwork.)

Also the estimate of how many rows to weave was off by quite a bit, there were some swirlies added to the ribbon where the ends of the weaving didn't meet. Maybe it's time to do like the knitters and crocheters do, and make sample squares so estimating the number of rows to fill a space would be easier and closer to the actual number needed. (The squares could even be strung on a long strand and hung on the wall for reference as needed. Must consider that thought.)

Beads used for this year's spool: Matsuno Dynamites size 11, thread used for weaving: Fireline 6 pound crystal. Base spool was a 500 yard spool from the stash of "stuff to use somehow."

Beads used for last year's spool: it's been a while, but I think they were Delica size 11. Weave used last year was two-drop peyote.
